About Us

Hello! We (Danielle, Helen, and Tiffany) are three young scholars trying to start a space where anyone and everyone can share their interests about classics. All three of us started out as PhD students at Penn, where we could discuss all the things we loved related to the ancient Greek and Roman worlds. However, we noticed that as young scholars in the field, we wanted more: more kinds of conversations (not just academic!) with more people who love classics like we do. There are online spaces for conversations for classics, but they can be hard to find and generally decentralized. So in comes Collective Musings, a place where anyone can engage with classics in whatever way they feel like - whether it's through art, writing, or anything else.

We, Collective Musings, are an inclusive Classics-related space where people come together, regardless of professional standing or expertise, to discuss topics related to the ancient Mediterranean world. This space is shaped by these values:

Accessibility - For our audience - anyone, regardless of their stakes in Classics, can read it and be a part of things.

Low Stakes - The barrier of entry is low, so anyone who is interested can submit an article.

Collaborative - We build on and with each other, we don’t undermine each other.

Community - We’re trying to create a space for people to come together and talk about classics together. We’re a space built by and for POC and LGBTQ+ folks.

Imperfection - Our writing might have typos, our arguments may fall flat, and we will not always meet our own standards. But our imperfections will be the impetus for a new type of space.
